National Honor Society Eligibility Requirements
Membership in the Cypress Park High School National Honor Society is an honor that recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
Applicants should carefully review each requirement before submitting an application.
1. Scholarship
Applicants must be a junior or senior with a minimum 5.8 cumulative GPA.
2. Leadership
Applicants must have held a minimum of TWO (2) elected or appointed leadership positions during high school.
Students should list all elected or appointed leadership positions they have held on campus or in an off-campus organization. Leadership positions should involve directly guiding, leading, motivating, or taking responsibility for others.
Examples of qualifying elected or appointed leadership positions:
- Officer in a choir or performing arts organization
- Section leader in band
- Team captain or co-captain
- Club or organization officer
- Student organization leader
- Camp counselor
- Employee trainer
- Shift leader or supervisor
Examples that do not qualify as elected or appointed leadership:
- Assistant teacher or helper
- A rotating team captain position assigned to most or all team members
- Honorary titles that do not involve leadership responsibilities
- Big Brother/Big Sister positions required of all members
- Counselor or aide positions that are primarily service-based
3. Service
Applicants must have completed a minimum of TWENTY (20) service hours overall beginning the summer following their 8th-grade year.
Service hours must include:
- At least TWO (2) different service activities
- Service completed during at least TWO (2) different years
- Service provided for a verifiable nonprofit organization
- No compensation received for the service
Applicants will be asked to provide details about their service activities and organizations.
Examples of qualifying service:
- Volunteering with a nonprofit organization
- Tutoring without pay through a school or recognized organization
- Food drives and community collection events
- Community cleanup projects
- Service through scouting organizations
- Volunteering with nonprofit community, religious, or charitable organizations
Examples that do not qualify as service:
- Unpaid work for a for-profit business
- Volunteering at an event that is considered part of your required participation in another organization
- Household chores or work performed for family members
- Service completed before the summer following 8th grade
- Activities that cannot be verified through a nonprofit organization
4. Character
Character is an important part of National Honor Society membership. Faculty and administrators will have the opportunity to provide feedback regarding each applicant's character, conduct, and commitment to the Cypress Park community.
NHS members are expected to consistently:
- Treat students, staff, and community members with respect
- Follow Cypress Park and CFISD expectations
- Follow campus badge and dress code requirements
- Follow teacher and campus expectations regarding cell phone use
- Meet academic and organizational deadlines
- Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and responsibility
The Cypress Park administration will also review disciplinary records and report applicable disciplinary infractions, including instances of academic dishonesty.
Students involved in academic dishonesty may be ineligible for NHS membership. Any additional consequences regarding NHS eligibility will be determined in accordance with Cypress Park and CFISD expectations.
A Well-Rounded Candidate
Cypress Park NHS is looking for students who demonstrate depth, consistency, and variety across all four pillars.
Strong candidates should be able to demonstrate meaningful involvement in multiple organizations, teams, activities, service opportunities, or groups while showing a consistent commitment to scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
